13 Things To Do Instead of Being Online

Lately, I've found myself being guilty of spending too much time online. GASP! Yes, imagine that... I never thought it would be so easy, but apparently it is. :o( Since I don't want to get caught in the trap of wasting my days on the world-wide web, I made myself a list of some ways in which the time could be better spent.

1. Play with your kids.
Board games, building snowmen, tag in the livingroom--they'll love it. Another great option: a large tent, using all of the diningroom chairs and a half dozen blankets.

2. Make time for your spouse. Good marriages don't just happen. And no, dueling laptops doesn't count as quality time. And substituting a DVD won't either. Talk to each other, play a game, do a crossword puzzle, go for a walk.

3. Catch up on housework and laundry. Some of us have been known to occasionally neglect the wifely household duties to play WordTwist on Facebook or catch up on blogs. :o) But it feels great when you see the bottom of the laundry hamper--even if just for a few seconds...

4. Clean out closets, and organize drawers and cabinets. There's something wonderful about a well-ordered house. Plus, you can round up unwanted items and sell them on Ebay or Craigslist.

5. Work on that project. Yes, that one. The one you've been procrastinating on for a couple months now. Wouldn't it be great to know that it was finally done?

6. Cook something your family loves.
It's healthier and cheaper. Also, it never hurts to share with another family: make a plate of cookies for someone else too.

7. Exercise. Go directly to the nearest full length mirror and scrutinize your tailfeathers. If you're happy with what you see, by all means, get back on the computer., but otherwise... A good workout benefits the body AND the soul, and boosts the energy level.

8. Get some sleep. 4 hours of nightly rest (because we stayed up too late uploading pictures) will catch up with us. Ever heard of beauty sleep...?

9. Read. Read your Bible. Read the newspaper. Read a novel. Read to your kids. READ something! It's a rather forgotten art these days...

10. Listen to music. Better yet, make some music yourself.

11. Make some phone calls. Call up friends or dial the number of someone you know who is lonely and struggling. They need to hear a friendly voice today.

12. Entertain. Open your home to other people--the fellowship will lift spirits and strengthen the bonds of friendship. It doesn't have to be elaborate--just make them welcome.

13. Pray. Every new year, a couple hundred of us vow we'd like to spend more time alone with God, have quality devotions and maybe know our Bible better. A closer walk with God: we have the perfect opportunity to do so, if we'll just take the time.

And now, if you'll excuse me, there's a small boy holding a copy of "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" and we need some quality time...

Good reminder. I plan to take some time away from the computer soon...at least 15 minutes. Just kidding! It is easy to let it eat too much of your time.

Great post! You're absolutely right. Since we have gotten internet access at our home, time seems to be slipping away from me! :) Thanks for the reminder! I enjoy reading your blog!
