Once Upon a Time: A Belated Anniversary Post...

(Disclaimer: I missed writing a proper anniversary post, because our 11th landed right in the midst of our departure for our first VBS of the summer. (Much like our 10th. And our 9th...) This is a portion of something I wrote on my private blog, and it still needs more revision, but I thought I'd share it here. Some of it is in code and would only be understood by Gene and a few close friends, but just ignore that.

I don't often gush about Gene on here, because I'm not wild about the phony sappiness some enjoy spreading across the internet, but I do happen to think I married the most amazing
(and longsuffering) man on planet earth. Love you, Gene Davis--still can't believe you picked me...)

Once upon a time, there was a handsome and talented Prince. He was smart and funny and he bore a striking resemblance to George Clooney. He was a popular Prince and everyone loved him.

When it came time to choose a bride, he could have had any young lady he wanted. Naturally, it was assumed that he would choose for himself a princess. But the Prince looked out over the kingdom and spied a homely scullery maid with yellow hair and big teeth, and he chose to love her.

She wasn't much to look at, she did not come from noble breeding and she had no discernable talents. Her pie crust was abominable; her piano playing even worse. She was very poor and not terribly bright, and in those days, her insecurities sometimes made her shy. Worse yet, she was foreign.

The Prince showered the yellow headed maid with flowers, gifts and pasta dinners (which explains much about her royal hips) and treated her like royalty. He told her she was beautiful so many times that she started to believe it might actually be true--even if just in his eyes. He helped her draw close to the KING. He ignored those who said he could have done better and he held tight to the maid who loved him.

He proposed in the moonlight, with flowers and crystal glasses of sparkling grape juice and the homely maid flossed her big teeth and cried. She said she could not be a Prince's wife, because she did not play the piano. The Prince laughed and assured her that he did not mind. (And used that story to entertain castle guests for years to come...)

The Prince arranged a beautiful royal wedding and claimed the maid as his Princess. He installed her in his palace and did not complain when she painted the walls in bright colors and once pickled the royal chicken. He did not complain when the Princess never mastered pie crust. He did not even complain when the Princess came out of her shell and turned out to be verbose, and a wee bit mischievious.

The kingdom was relieved when the royal offspring came out mostly normal. With the exception of their yellow hair, they bore a striking resemblance to their father. Like their mother, they were verbose and mischievious, but the Prince indulged them all graciously.

He was a wise and kind Prince, and he knew when to let the Princess cry and when to make her laugh. He knew better than to answer when she asked if her royal garments made her look fat. He sometimes delivered coffee to the royal bedchamber and he helped around the castle. He stood firm on the rules of the kingdom, but declared the royal language to be "Love".

The Prince knew that if he was patient, the KING would help her be a better Princess, in her own unique way. He encouraged his Princess to be the best she could be, even if it was different from everyone else. He encouraged her to follow the KING and he led by example.

Sometimes the castle has been attacked by enemies, but the Prince has always kept his family safe in the protection of the KING. And the Princess? Yes, happily ever after...

This prince truly married the most beautiful princess in all the world. The most wonderful part is that she was choosen by the King just for this prince.

I love you!!!! You are not only beautiful on the outside but even more beautiful on the inside. I thank God for blessing me with you.

A beautiful story, Angie! It made me laugh & cry by turns. I hope someday I can meet my own prince, though it seems to me, that you may just have gotten one of the last ones. Sigh. Real princes are about as scarce as purple dragons these days. My tiny supply of Hope is getting smaller & smaller, but it still manages to be there whenever I need it. You story has made me want to make sure it never runs out.....

Lana, I see purple dragons all the time, so don't give up on your Prince just yet!

Oh brother. I feel silly. I'm sitting here bawling!

That was really really neat. And sweet. But not in a fake and sappy-sort of way. It was an authentic "God-makes-fairy-tales-his-own-way" kind of sweet. (I tend to not like the words "sweet" and "cute." Thus the word explanation.

Thanks for sharing.

p.s. i don't much like all the public sappiness, either. (she said under her breath, so as not to offend those who truly enjoy it and are sincere).

Great story, Angie.

And don't you DARE stop blogging, as I see you mentioned a few posts ago. Though we might not read blogs as often, now that Facebook has much of our attention, we DO read yours and enjoy it very much!
